Infant Reflux on the Rise ?

When doing my pediatric CPR and family emergency workshop I often hear parents concern over episodes where the infant seems to stop breathing, causing tremendous fear for that family. In some instances a 9-1-1 call is made, particularly when the baby “turns blue” (a cardinal sign of low oxygen). These episodes are frequently associated with feeding which increases the perception that a choking event is underway.

Because of these very real fears many parents visit their pediatrician’s office and want answers. According to a recently published article in the Journal Pediatrics, there has been an alarming increase in the diagnosis of “infant reflux.” Among other things, this has been the cause of a huge increase in treatment, principally with the prescribing of acid suppressing medications (Pepcid, Zantac, etc.) for these infants.

What Is Reflux?

Taber’s medical dictionary defines reflux as “a return or backward flow.” Consequently, the terms (reflux and regurgitation) are often used interchangeably. Various studies reveal that a major percentage of the infant population in the U.S. (40-70%) has some form of reflux event. In many cases these events are noted when a baby “spits up” during feeding. There are, however, numerous occasions when I have heard parents tell me that some form of regurgitation can happen during non feeding times.

The rapidly growing infant usually ingests volumes of food (breast milk/formula, etc.) that on a per kilogram basis are much greater than larger children or adults. Because of this relative high volume and a relatively shorter esophagus (stomach tube) a “spillover effect” can occur. Many pediatricians believe this to be “physiologic reflux” as opposed to “reflux disease.”

Episodes of this spillover can occur infrequently or multiple times a day. This puts many parents and care providers on constant alert, often causing significant
anxiety, including fear of feeding the infant. Several medical studies suggest that the situation is self-resolving in approximately 95% of infants by 12-15 months of age.

Reflux and the incidence of apnea
Without question, the issue of effective breathing during these episodes is of primary concern to the parents I speak with. So, what is the relationship here? In depth studies looking at the relationship of regurgitation and apnea (cessation of breathing) consider the physiologic factors. Basically, “apnea is linked to a reflex in the larynx (near or around the air passages) cause respiratory pauses, airway closure, and swallowing immediately after regurgitation to the upper airway.” The consequences of these episodes are usually minimal to non-existent. Yet, as mentioned earlier, some infants have prolonged apnea, turn blue and on some occasions begin to lose consciousness. These are clearly the most unusual but cause the most panic in the parent or care provider.

Getting the Right Diagnosis
It is far too simple to assume that if an infant has episodes of reflux/regurgitation, that they in fact have GERD. There are specific diagnostic markers that your physician will look for before making this diagnosis. In the meantime, there has been a skyrocketing in the use of the aforementioned medications to treat the symptoms of reflux. One belief is that parents are so affected by the promotion of medications (usually seen on T.V. for the adult population) for this disorder that they demand a prescription and, in fact, often feel that the baby is under- treated if they leave the office without one. It turns out that the F.D.A. has not approved the use of these medications, specifically for the infant population.

In the meantime, what can parents do to assure that their baby is safe?

The most common recommendations tend to include:
- Propping the infant at a somewhat higher angle while feeding
- Increase the time between feeding and going down for nap/sleep
- Place some risers at the head of the infant’s crib (several inches at least)
- Keep a “spitting up” or reflux log that you can refer to when speaking with your pediatrician

In those very rare instances when breathing stops and the infant turns bluish in color (either face, lips, etc.) you should be prepared to stimulate the infant by using a modified “airway obstruction” position, and use some patting to their back when they are turned in a head down position. This stimulation is most likely what will get a response, even though this is not a true airway obstruction event.

Finally, be prepared for the most unusual of events . . . . Where a baby has prolonged loss of breathing. This may require the initiation of CPR in rare cases.

Prenatal Yoga provides a relaxed and nurturing atmosphere where you can enhance the bonding process with your baby while supporting the development and strengthening of your body, mind, and spirit during pregnancy. The yoga exercises and postures, deep breathing techniques, and mantras greatly impact the quality of your pregnancy and birth experience as well as the many changes your body and emotions go through after the baby arrives. This class ends with an extra long relaxation period.

Prenatal Yoga is a great way to develop the core muscles that are so important both before and after birth. The exercises are designed both to strengthen & lengthen your body, as well as put you in tune with different areas so that you have better control over your body during birth.

This is also a wonderful opportunity to meet other pregnant women who can relate with you as you experience the miracle of the life growing within you and the transition of becoming a mother.

The benefits of a regular prenatal yoga practice will provide you with the healthiest and most peaceful pregnancy possible. Prenatal yoga practice can also help ease morning sickness, alleviate edema, and prevent varicose veins. Postnatal yoga practice begins to allow a new mom to regain strength after birth.

The yoga exercises are designed to:

* Help strengthen the pelvic muscles - instrumental in the birthing process, and post-birth to bring your body back to a pre-pregnancy state
* Exercise and strengthen the uterus so that it functions more efficiently and increases the potential for a normal delivery
* Exercise the spine and help reduce backaches
* Aid in proper digestion and circulation, and regulate breathing

If you would like to bring your own yoga mat, feel free! Otherwise we do have mats available for you to use. We also provide all of the yoga props such as blankets, bolsters, straps, etc to make a variety of postures possible and comfortable for everyone.

Prior yoga experience is not necessary. Many women first start doing yoga when they're pregnant!

Breastfeeding Got You Down? Get the Support You need!

Our Breastfeeding Support Group is changing lives for our new moms and babies! We receive constant thank you's for how these gatherings impact the daily routines of our mothers and infants!

This group is led by a lactation consultant, and is a wonderful way to meet and talk with other new moms who are breastfeeding as well as get your questions answered about latching on, milk supply, pumping, going back to work, weaning, etc.

The Support Group is held on Tuesdays at 10:30am.

It's only $10 for a drop-in, so come on out and get your breastfeeding and lactation concerns addressed. It's not worth sitting at home wondering if your baby is getting enough milk or whether he's latching on properly when you can figure it out at the Breastfeeding Support Group. Get back into shape with Mommy and Baby Yoga

A time for mothers to nurture and be nurtured. You’ll be doing exercises both on your own and with your baby. These basic yoga movements include warm ups, abdominal/pelvic exercises, leg work & arm work, and relaxation - all done in a fun collaborative way. Babies are incorporated into the class both as observers and as active participants using soothing infant massage, songs and rhymes, and playful exercises.

The exercises in this yoga class will help you to...

Finding the Right Preschool for Your Child

Once you've determined your child is ready for preschool, the next step is to actually find one. So where do you begin?

There are a number of things to consider when choosing a preschool for your child. Some may be more important to you then others so making a list will help you put your thoughts together and have something to refer to.

Start by identify your priorities and needs. Is location a deciding factor for you? Are you looking for a preschool near your workplace, or would one closer to home be more convenient? Are you looking for a specific approach to learning? Do you want the curriculum to be more educational based or to include activities such as dancing and storytelling? Figure out what are your must haves and what you're willing to be flexible on.

Do your research. Ask around to find the most reputable preschools. Friends and family can give you the names of schools they've liked, and we all know that personal references are the best kind.

Go online. Both NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) and the National Association of Family Child Care have Web sites as well; visit them for guidelines and contact information. NAEYC also has a searchable online database of accredited centers and preschools.

Visit and interview. You can ask a few preliminary questions over the phone (to find out basic information and fees, for example), but you won't get a sense of what a preschool is really like until you go there and meet the staff and director. Ask the director about everything from hours, fees, and vacation schedules to philosophies on child-rearing issues such as discipline and nutrition. Also, get a schedule of daily activities. Most importantly, pay attention to your gut feelings about the place and how the director handles your questions. Your initial instinct about a place can be very telling.

When you visit the classrooms, check the teacher-child ratios (In bigger schools, 1:5 is typical for 2 to 3 year olds, 1:7 is ideal for 3 to 4 year olds, 1:15 is acceptable for 5 year olds), and note how many children are in a classroom. Observe how the teachers interact with the kids - make sure they're friendly, caring, and encouraging.

Ideally, you'll want a regular, challenging curriculum, as well as a warm, clean, safe environment and experienced teachers who happy with their jobs. Ask about staff turnover. If the teachers change every six months, move on. Children crave consistency and need to form strong relationships with their caregivers, so you don't want a preschool where teachers come and go.

Ultimately, choosing a preschool is a personal decision. If, after visiting a preschool, you love the idea of having your child there, it's probably the right place for you.

Positive word-of-mouth is a powerful endorsement. If a certain preschool has a lot of buzz, ask parents why they're raving about it. Ask each school you're considering for a list of parents whose children have attended the school. Call them, and ask specific questions - Not just whether they like the preschool - ask what exactly they like about it and what they don't. If their child is no longer there, ask why. You may also want to call your state's Better Business Bureau to see whether any complaints have been filed against the school or its teachers.
Kid-test it

Visit the school with your child. You'll want to see how s/he and the teachers interact and whether s/he seems comfortable in the preschool's environment. Does s/he enjoy the activities? Do the teachers seem interested in getting to know your child? Your child's gut feeling about the school is just as important as yours. If s/he gets a positive vibe s/he'll be willing to spend the day thee.

If the preschool of your dreams has no openings, don't despair. Put your child on the waiting list, and let them know why you like the school so much. It won't guarantee you a place, but it can't hurt to let the school know how enthusiastic you are about the program. In the meantime, if you've applied to more than one school, you'll at least have a few options to consider.

Raising a child with a healthy self esteem

Nurturing your toddler's self-esteem is essential to boosting his self-worth and laying the foundation for your child's development as he tries things on his own. Self-esteem is believed to come from having a sense of belonging, believing that we're capable, and knowing our contributions are valued and worthwhile. As a parent, you want to ensure that your child develops pride and self-respect — in himself and in his cultural roots — as well as faith in his ability to handle any life's challenges - whether social or educational. Here are ten simple strategies to help boost your child's self-esteem:

Give unconditional love. A child's self-worth blossoms with the kind of no-strings-attached devotion that says, "I love you, no matter who you are or what you do." So go ahead and lavish your child with love. Give him/her plenty of cuddles, kisses, and pats on the shoulder. And don't forget to tell him/her how much you love them.

Discipline with love. Your child benefits the most when you accept him/her for who they are regardless of strengths, difficulties, temperament, or abilities. And if/when you do have to correct your child, make it clear that it's his behavior — not him — that's unacceptable. For instance, instead of saying, "You're a being a bad boy! Why can't you be good?" you can say, "Pushing (friend's name) isn't nice. It hurts and gives him an ouchie." This also allows your child to develop empathy.

Give undivided attention. Carve out time to spend one-on-one time with your child. This sends the message that you think s/he's important and valuable. It could just be a few minutes of talking/ reading/playing/interacting on some level while making eye contact and affirming your child's self worth. When you're strapped for time, let your child know it without ignoring his needs. Acknowledge them by saying something like "tell me about the tower you built with your legos, and then I'll make dinner."

Set limits. Establish reasonable rules for your toddler/preschooler - make sure it's something they can follow like eating snacks at the dinner table or cleaning up after playing. Be specific with your rules, if you tell him to put his dirty close away - make sure to tell him where they go (hamper) and make sure he understands that's the only place they go (ie not the floor or his bed). Rules give children a sense of security and stability. It may take constant repetition initially, but with some encouragement he will learn to follow the rules. If you're clear and consistent while show him that you trust him to do the right thing, he will.

Support taking healthy risks. Encourage your child to explore something new, such as trying a different food, finding a new pal, or riding a bike, etc. Though there's always the possibility of failure, without risk there's little opportunity for success. So let your child safely experiment, and resist the urge to intervene. If he's showing frustration with a task, don't try to "rescue" him. You'll build his self-esteem by balancing your need to protect him with his need to tackle new tasks.

Celebrate the positive. Everyone responds well to encouragement, so make an effort to acknowledge the good things your child does every day within his earshot. They'll enjoy hearing good things said ABOUT them as opposed to TO them. they'll get to bask in the glow of your praise and the person's heartening response. Be specific about what your your child did. This will enhance his sense of accomplishment and self-worth and let him know exactly what he did right.

Let mistakes happen. These are valuable lessons for your child's confidence. So if your child puts his juice too close to the edge of the table and it tips, encourage him to think about what he might do differently next time. That way his self-esteem won't drop and he'll understand that it's okay to make mistakes sometimes. Also, when you goof up yourself, admit it, so he sees adults make mistakes too but show him what you do to correct them. Acknowledging and recovering from your mistakes sends an important message to your child to accept his own shortcomings.

Listen well. If your child needs to talk, stop and listen to what he has to say. He needs to know that his thoughts, feelings, desires, and opinions are heard and matter. Help him get comfortable with his emotions by labeling them. Say, "I understand you're sad because you have to say bye to your friends." By accepting his emotions without judgment, you validate his feelings and show that you value what he has to say. If you share your own feelings ("I'm excited about going out to see a movie"), he'll gain confidence expressing his own.

Resist comparisons. Comments such as "Why can't you be more like your brother/sister?" or "Why can't you be nice like (a friend)?" will just remind your child of where he struggles in a way that fosters shame, envy, and competition. Sometimes even positive comparisons, such as "You're the best player" could be potentially damaging since a child can find it hard to live up to this image. If you let your child know you appreciate him for the unique individual he is, he'll be more likely to value himself too.

Find the balance between encouragement and praise. Make sure to reward the task, not just the person to let your child know you acknowledge his efforts as well as his accomplishments. Provide the kind of support encourages progress — not just rewarding achievement. So if your preschooler is struggling to fasten his seat belt, you could say, "You're trying very hard and you almost have it!" instead of "Not like that. Let me do it." offer empathy and acknowledge his feelings. You can dole out the praise judiciously and offer encouragement liberally - it will help your child grow up to feel good about himself.

And for a bonus eleventh tip - enjoy your time with your kids. Really learn to appreciate the special moments - your kids already do!

Packing Tips for Traveling with Babies

Little travelers need a surprising amount of stuff! Here are some tips and a checklist of items that can help alleviate stress while traveling.

* Start preparing to pack a few days before you travel. Keep a running list of things to take, or put items out on a table or dresser as you think of them.
* Use a diaper bag with a waterproof lining and a shoulder strap.
* Be prepared for leaky diapers and baby spit-up on the airplane: Tuck an extra outfit or two for your baby – and an extra shirt for you – into your carry-on bag.
* Prevent leaks by packing medicines and toiletries in resealable plastic bags.
* Pack each of your baby's outfits in its own zipped plastic bag so you don't have to hunt around for tiny socks, shirts, and so on.
* Take your camera, battery charger, and an extra memory card.
* Take a clip-on reading light so you can read without disturbing your baby.
* Take the phone number for your baby's health care provider in case you have questions while you're on the road.

Packing Checklist
- Diapers - The rule of thumb is to take one for each hour you'll be in transit, plus extras in case of delays
- If you use cloth diapers, make sure to also take all your extra pads and cleaning essentials.
- Pad or blanket to put under your baby during diaper changes
- Blankets - Bring a few — you'll use them to lay your baby on, cover your baby, cover yourself if you're nursing, protect your clothes from messy burps, shade your baby, and more
- Nursing Shawl - if you're nursing
- Breast pump - some like the pump in style or freestyle for their convenient mobility while others prefer a manual handheld because it's smaller.
- Plastic bags - Carry a variety of sizes for storing soiled diapers, clothes, and blankets.

- Extra bottles, nipples, and sippy cups if appropriate
- Nightlight - Especially if you're staying at a hotel - this allows you to keep the lighting soothingly soft for middle-of-the-night diaper changes. It's also good if your baby uses one or in fact having anything familiar your baby will use to help him sleep.
- First-aid kit
- Baby pain reliever (for teething or ear aches) and supplies for treating minor injuries
- Sling/Wrap or baby carrier - Keep it lightweight - it's a wonderful hands-free way to keep your baby close in crowded places like airports.
- Portable crib or play yard - creates a safe place for your baby to sleep or play
- Inflatable baby bathtub or a daphne - makes for an easier bath time at your destination
- Car seat for safer travel by car or plane
- Collapsible stroller that can be gate-checked or stored in the overhead bin of an airplane.

Holiday Charity Drive to help Mom and Babies in Los Angeles

But many moms out there often wonder whether they'll have enough diapers for the next day or where to get another outfit because their baby outgrew the only one they have.

With your help, we want to change that! We want to make sure that all babies in LA are able to be diapered, clothed, and fed. By donating your slightly used baby clothes & toys as well as new diapers, you'll make a huge difference in the lives of Los Angeles moms and babies in need this holiday season.

We've partnered with other baby boutiques across LA County to donate diapers, baby clothes, toys, books, and more to mothers and babies in need in Downtown LA.

We've collected numerous items already but we still need your help!

Is Your Child Ready For A Sippy Cup

Sippy cups can be a great way for your baby to transition from nursing or bottle-feeding to a regular cup. They can also improve hand-to-mouth coordination. When your baby has the motor skills to handle a cup but not the skills to keep the drink from spilling, a sippy cup can give him some independence while keeping cleanup to a minimum.

When should I introduce a sippy cup to my child?

Encourage your child to use a regular cup when you think he's ready. Some babies enjoy using a sippy cup as early as 6 months, and others aren't interested until after their first birthday. Most babies seem ready around 7 to 9 months, though.

What's the best way to transition to a sippy cup?

Some babies take to a sippy cup immediately, while others take a while to get used to the idea. Here are some tips to make the transition smoother:

* Start off with a soft, pliable, nipple-like spout, which will feel more familiar to your baby than a hard plastic spout. Some trainer cups, like the Green Sprouts Trainer Sippy cup, offer a spout that's similar to the bottle, making for a smoother transition.

* Show your baby how to raise the cup to his mouth and tip it up to drink.
* Give it some time. Until your baby masters the technique, you may want to put water in the cup to avoid too many messes. Don't worry if your baby doesn't use the sippy cup properly for a while. It makes a fine toy, too!
* Try different models until you find one that suits your baby. Some cups, like the Dr. Brown Interchangeable Training Cup, have valves that are so effective at keeping the liquid from spilling that children really have to work to get a drink.

What should I do if my child refuses the sippy cup?

Give it time. Your baby may not be ready or may desire a different spout or type of sippy cup. Some babies even graduate from breast or bottle straight to a regular cup. If you'd rather your baby learn to use a sippy, though, whether for convenience or because you think it'll make a good transition – try these strategies that many parents have used successfully:

* Dip the tip of the sippy spout into the breast milk or formula and then give it to your baby. She may just need a hint! Babies 6 months or younger should get only formula or breast milk in the sippy cup.
* Show your baby that the spout is like a nipple (it needs to be sucked on). Try touching the tip of the spout to the roof of her mouth to stimulate the sucking reflex.
* If she drinks from a bottle, give her half of her formula in the bottle. When it's empty, switch to the sippy cup for the second half of the feeding (continue to hold her as you do when she's bottle-feeding).
* Offer your baby a straw. Some baby cups, like the Green Sprouts Aqua Bottle, come with built-in straws, and some babies find these easier to use than a spout (though others will give you a clueless look). If your baby does get the hang of sucking from a straw, she may then be better able to handle sucking from the spout.

* Switch beverages. Some babies will drink water or juice – but not breast milk or formula – from a sippy. Sometimes it's a matter of association (milk belongs in a bottle or breast). Never give juice to a baby 6 months or younger, and remember to limit juice for older babies and toddlers to no more than 4 to 6 ounces (a half cup or so) a day.
* Some parents have had success waiting to introduce the sippy cup until their baby is ready to start drinking whole milk (at age 1). Show her how. Get yourself a clean sippy and let your baby see you drink from it. Or have a sibling drink from a sippy in front of the baby. Sometimes all it takes is a little sucking noise (make it when you give her the cup) to inspire a baby to start sucking.

Ease Your Child Into Eating Solids

You're most likely to start introducing solids to your baby any time between 4 and 6 months. Your baby will give you clear signs when he's ready to move beyond liquid-only nourishment. Some cues to look for include:

* Head control. Your baby needs to be able to keep his head in a steady, upright position.
* Losing the "extrusion reflex." To keep solid food in his mouth and then swallow it, your baby needs to stop using his tongue to push food out of his mouth.
* Sitting well when supported. Even if he's not quite ready for a highchair, your baby needs to be able to sit upright to swallow well.
* Chewing motions. Your baby's mouth and tongue develop in sync with his digestive system. To start solids, he should be able to move food to the back of his mouth and swallow. As he learns to swallow efficiently, you may notice less drooling – though if your baby's teething, you might still see a lot of drool.
* Significant weight gain. Most babies are ready to eat solids when they've doubled their birth weight (or weigh about 15 pounds) and are at least 4 months old.
* Growing appetite. He seems hungry – even with eight to ten feedings of breast milk or formula a day.
* Curiosity about what you're eating. Your baby may begin eyeing your bowl of cereal or reaching for a forkful of pasta as it travels from your plate to your mouth.

Your body already knows how to give birth - it just needs some preparation...

Supported Birth covers stages of labor, pain coping techniques, drugs, and cesareans as most typical childbirth classes do. What makes Supported Birth different from other Childbirth Preparation classes is that it is taught in an interactive and personalized way where couples will participate in discussions as opposed to only listening to lectures. Couples will use self-exploration and come out of class feeling empowered and positive about birth by learning there is no one right way to give birth. This class is especially good for women who have fears about giving birth and those attracted to the idea of natural childbirth.

This four week course educates women and their partners to make conscious choices about the birth of their baby based on a combination of technical knowledge, confidence in the natural biological process of birth, self exploration, and many different pain coping tools and techniques. Women and their partners will understand the importance of a woman’s need to feel safe & nurtured in her birthing environment. There is “no one right” way or method for giving birth.

Infant & Toddler CPR & First Aid

We'd all like to think that we'll never be in a position of having to save our baby's life, but it could happen. Babies choke on food and toys, or slip under the water in the tub or a pool, or get caught in drawstrings and curtain cords. If your baby is ever choking or suddenly lifeless, you would want to know what to do!

Although you might be able to find some tips on the internet, these techniques differ depending on the age of the child, and doing them improperly can possibly be harmful, so it's important to set aside a few hours to take an infant and child CPR course in your area, to learn and practice the proper techniques. If you live in Los Angeles, whether in the San Fernando Valley, the Westside, or even Burbank, Pasadena, or Glendale, we have the class for you.

At A Mother's Haven, our Infant and Toddler CPR and First Aid class will show you just what to do in those situations. We offer the “Save a Little Life” course at our Encino location about once a month throughout the year. The course is also offered in Spanish about every other month. We highly recommend that all parents, grandparents, and caregivers attend this potentially life-saving course. You can either take the class while you are pregnant, or after your baby is born (come to class without your baby though, so that you can really focus your attention on learning the techniques).

Time to babyproof?

Parents worry endlessly about how to protect their children from strangers and violence, but many overlook one of the biggest threats to their children's safety and well-being — their own home. Whether your little bundle of joy is crawling, walking, or still perfecting tummy time, it's never too early to begin childproofing, so make sure you do so carefully.

Take Safety Measures

Is your sweet little munchkin pretending to be top chef by getting into all kitchen cabinets and appliances? Mommy's Helper Appliance Lok helps keep appliance door safe from little hands. It has a locking strap for refrigerator or stove and can be easily installed.

The most effective way to ensure your baby's safety is to take a baby's-eye view of your home. Get down on your hands and knees and see how things look from down there. What's within reach? What looks tempting? Where would you go if you could crawl, toddle, or walk?

This will help you figure out which cupboards, drawers, and other spaces your child might get into. As he starts walking and climbing, you'll have to reevaluate again, looking higher each time.

Carefully lock up or stow away every potential poison or other hazard, including cleaning products, medicines, vitamins, and knives. The cabinet and drawer latches by the American Red Cross help prevent children from opening cabinets and drawers. They also feature a two-step locking mechanism for added safety and can be easily installed in cabinets and drawers.

Aside from cabinets, closets and doors also quickly become a fun activity for your now physically active child. The Door Knob Safety Covers will help deter curious children from entering rooms or closets.

The over-sized grip design spins loosely around the door knob when a child tries to turn it, yet is easy for adults to grip and squeeze to open the door. In addition, the Lock-Guard feature covers the door handle locking button to protect against accidental lock-outs and fits all standard door knobs.

If you have bi-folding doors on your closets or cabinets, you can use the Bi-Fold Door Lock by the American Red Cross.

Sharp Turns Ahead

When babies start to crawl or walk, they're so excited by their new freedom, they won't bother 'watching their step.' To help insure they get to where they're going safely, certain precautions need to be taken. For example that beautiful coffee table smack in the middle of your living room, with the sharp edges, that you never gave a second thought about before kids... Your child apparently likes it as much as you do and feels the need to play there as often as possible. Now you can let him without worrying. Apply Jumbo Corner Guards to sharp corners of table, counters, cabinets, and anywhere else you have sharp corners. The full-length double-stick tape keeps the Corner Guards securely fastened and removes quickly and easily when no longer needed. They're also fire retardant, non-toxic and latex-free.

Protect Outlets

Kids are explorers by nature. It's a good idea to protect electrical outlets with outlet covers. The American Red Cross Hinged Outlet Covers help keep your child safe while providing access to one outlet and keeping the other covered. These are ideal for frequently used outlets and fit any standard electrical outlet. Their neutral color is less likely to attract children while its hinged design is sturdy, durable, and easy to use.

If your child is extra curious and you're worried these removable plug-in caps can eventually end up in your baby's mouth, replace the outlet covers themselves – at least those that are accessible – with ones that include a sliding safety latch.

The Universal Outlet Cover by KidCo works on both Standard and Decora style outlets. It automatically covers the outlet when plug is removed thanks to its sliding mechanism and ultimately prevents injury from inserting objects into outlet.

Go for the Glow

When your baby cries in the middle of the night, you don't want to go into their room and fumble around in the dark looking for things and you certainly don't want to turn on the big overhead light and completely wake them up. The Cool Touch Nursery Light by the American Red Cross provides a soft glowing light with a simple on/off button. It has cushioned pads for scratch-resistant tabletop use and it also has a mounted hanger for wall mounting.

Another option is to use a night light. The LED Night Light by the American Red Cross uses far less energy than standard light bulb. Its cool white light is not too bright for the nursery and its long life gives more than 30,000 hours of use. There are no bulbs to change for convenience and added economy. Its photo sensor turns the light on when room gets dark and off during daylight, while the lens remains cool to the touch.

We know that your first year with your baby is challenging - You're tired, overwhelmed, and confused - This is where Mothers' Gathering comes in. Whether this baby is your first or fourth, we offer classes that are catered to your specific needs.

It's about building a community. This class can help alleviate those feelings of loneliness - even if you have family or friends around, you can feel alone in this journey as a new mom. Allow yourself the chance to get support from people who truly understand what you're going through. You will make friends for life. Mothers' Gathering provides the opportunity for your little one to find a new buddy, and most importantly, for you to build lasting friendship with other moms. These friendships will undoubtedly make a tremendous impact on your journey through motherhood.

Much more than a "Mommy and Me" class, our Mothers' Gathering classes are education & support groups for thinking moms who are looking for information, guidance & friendship. These eight week sessions truly allow for a place to establish a foundation and gather the tools to determine what fits best for each mom and her child.

Our philosophy is that there is no one "right way" to parent and what works for you might not work for another mother. And what might work one week, might not work the next. Whether you're a first or second or third time mom, we give you tips and strategies for your parenting tool box, helping you to find confidence in your parenting skills and choices.

Breastfeeding 101

Breastfeeding is endorsed by the world’s health and scientific organizations as the best way of feeding infants. Years of research have shed light on the vast array of benefits not only for children but also for mothers and society.

While breastfeeding is best for you and your baby, it is a learned skill. The natural aspects of breastfeeding are the baby’s innate suck mechanism and need for sustenance and your body’s production of milk. Because many of us were not breastfed, and didn’t grow up watching women nurse their babies, it is a topic and skill that we must learn as soon-to-be parents. Proper positioning and latch-on are essential for successful nursing. Learning prenatally how your body produces milk, and practicing proper nursing techniques, are the first steps to successfully breastfeeding your baby.

In this class you will:

* Learn about the anatomy and physiology of breastmilk production
* Learn and practice proper positioning and latch-on
* Learn how often a typical newborn will nurse
* Learn strategies to use if problems arise and when to seek help
* Discuss strategies for working and breastfeeding

This 3 hour class is held once a month on a Saturday afternoon from 2–5 pm. Our next class is Saturday, November 12th! Class size is limited to 6 couples. This small group size allows you to get your specific questions answered and the teacher to personalize the class to the couples' needs. Handouts and materials are provided.

Sleep Tips for Daylight Savings Time by Synthia Praglin

Daylight savings time will begin at 2:00am on Sunday November 6th when we turn the clocks back one hour. Adjusting to the shortened day and lack of sunlight can be hard on everyone, as we are forced to restructure our days. Here are some tips that may help make the adjustment a bit smoother.

On Sunday morning, your child will likely wake at their normal time, which unfortunately may be 1 hour earlier according to the new time. Keep their day and routine as close to normal as possible, according to the new time (meaning put them down for naps based on the new time). If bedtime was 7:30 on the old clock, it will now say 6:30. Try to keep them up until 7:00 on the new time unless they are so tired that you may miss the sleep window, in which case put them to bed at 6:30 and then begin to push bedtime ahead each day until you get to 7:30. Wake ups may continue to be a bit early for the first couple of days, but most will adjust within the first week. Watching the sleep cues and staying consistent will benefit everyone!

It's also easy to use:

Step One: Lay the blanket on a flat surface with the foot pouch at the bottom and lay baby between armflaps with tops of shoulders slightly above top of blanket.
Step Two: Fold the arm flaps over the outside of your baby's arms and tuck them snugly under her back on each side. IMPORTANT: You should lift the baby's bottom to be sure the arm flaps are flat and snug under baby's back.
Step Three: Pull the footpocket up over the feet. NOTE: Some babies' feet may not reach the foot pocket yet. This is okay: It will be there for them as they grow.
Step Four: Fold the right side of the blanket over your baby's belly and tuck it under the left arm pit (her right). This flap should wrap all the way under the baby's back.
Step Five: Wrap the left side of the blanket over the top of her belly and all the way around her until you run out of blanket. This is where it is important to pull the blanket snug. THE BLANKET MUST BE PULLED SNUG.
IMPORTANT: BE SURE THE TOP OF THE BLANKET IS SLIGHTLY BELOW THE TOPS OF THE SHOULDERS.

Important for newborns and smaller babies: After wrapping the arms (Step 2), fold the bottom of the foot pocket up so the feet touch the bottom of the wrap. This will create a more perfect, custom swaddle. Follow steps 4-5.

To further enhance effectiveness, try the following: After wrapping your baby, cradle her on your forearm facing down or forward. Gently rock or jiggle your baby while making long "Shushing" sounds in her ear. If your baby likes a pacifier, definitely use it

Here are some more helpful tips:

If your baby seems too warm, dress her in a diaper and The Amazing Miracle Blanket only.

The room temperature where your baby sleeps should be comfortable for a lightly dressed adult (67-72°F).

As your baby grows, the blanket may seem loose around her legs. This is perfectly okay. This will allow for proper movement and development of her hip and knee joints.

It is best to wrap your baby very snugly. It's normal for her to fuss when first wrapped - especially the first few times. But don't worry, after a week or two most babies begin to relax at the mere sight of the blanket.

Be sure that the blanket is NOT touching your baby's cheeks. This may wake her. If the blanket is touching her cheeks, you have wrapped her too low in the blanket. You must be sure the top of the blanket is slightly below the tops of her shoulders.

It is very important to tuck the arm flaps securely and flat under your baby's back as the flaps keep your baby from working her arms free and waking herself. This also keeps your baby's arms in the most effective position - at her sides.

Many babies prefer to have their feet free. In step two you may position your baby with her feet on top of the foot pouch to see if your baby prefers to be wrapped this way.

Our Tiny Dancer curriculum is a developmental and age-appropriate introduction to dance class. Our aim is to see individual growth and to instill a love of dance & movement in your child for the rest of his/her life. The goal of the Tiny Dancer program is to teach the fundamentals of dance through familiar rhymes and songs, while motivating and inspiring even the most timid child to be comfortable moving his/her body. This program encourages the joy of movement, self-expression, and fun! Our instructors provide a nurturing environment where parents and their child have fun as well as develop a love of dance and the basic skills that will last them a lifetime! Dance develops balance, control, posture, focus and fine-tuned listening skills. Because dance inherently involves problem solving, pattern and sequence, it enhances higher thinking abilities.

The Tiny Dancer class is appropriate for babies from around 14 months old to 30 months old. Your baby should be a strong walker to get the most out of the class!

2. Flip the LilyPadz inside out (the tacky side bowed out).

3. With a finger in the center of the LilyPadz, firmly place it on your breast, depressing your nipple.

4. With nipple in flattened position, smooth the edges down over the skin, making sure to smooth out any air pockets that might form underneath.

While feeding, your LilyPadz can be stored on the plastic domes used in packaging. This keeps the tacky surface clean and ready to go again. We know that your first year with your baby is challenging - You're tired, overwhelmed, and confused - This is where Mothers' Gathering comes in. Whether this baby is your first or fourth, we offer classes that are catered to your specific needs. Still wondering if Mothers' Gathering is right for you? Here's a list of just a few of the benefits...

It is a great bonding activity. Parent and child classes offer a wonderful opportunity for bonding, which ultimately provides a sense of security and fosters a positive self esteem. Bonding is necessary to help your little one grow and flourish. In a mommy and me class, you will interact together and participate in similar activities that will promote bonding.

It can help your child develop cognitive, social, and gross motor skills. Many mommy and me classes will help with your child's overall development. For example, in our Mothers' Gathering classes, you and your baby will sing songs, play with developmentally appropriate toys, and do movement activities together. It can help them acquire reasoning skills, increase self-control, and cultivate a lifelong love for music.

It is a fantastic way to make new friends. A class offers you a wonderful opportunity to make friends and meet other new moms. This is a great chance for your little one to find a new buddy, and for you to build a new friendship with another mom. Friendships can make a tremendous difference in your journey through motherhood.

It's about building a community that can help alleviate a feeling of loneliness. A parent and child class can help alleviate those feelings of loneliness - even if you have family or friends around, you can feel alone in this journey as a new mom. This class allows you to create meaningful relationships with other moms going through a similar experience. It also gets you out the door, provides a break in the day or week, and gives you an opportunity to get support from people who truly understand what you're going through.

Much more than a "Mommy and Me" class, our Mothers' Gathering classes are education & support groups for thinking moms who are looking for information, guidance & friendship. These eight week sessions truly allow for a place to establish a foundation and gather the tools to determine what fits best for each mom and her child.

Our philosophy is that there is no one "right way" to parent and what works for you might not work for another mother. And what might work one week, might not work the next. Whether you're a first or second or third time mom, we give you tips and strategies for your parenting tool box, helping you to find confidence in your parenting skills and choices.

We realize that for many women breastfeeding can be challenging. That's why at A Mother’s Haven, we offer a breastfeeding support group for all mothers who are nursing their baby and have any questions, need information, or want the camaraderie of other breastfeeding moms.

The group is facilitated by a highly knowledgeable Certified Lactation Consultant, who has breastfed her own children and has years of experience working with mothers and babies.

The Breastfeeding Support Group meets at our boutique in Encino on Tuesdays from 10:30-11:30 am. This informative drop-in group is only $10 per visit.

Holidays, Travel and Sleep Disruptions by Synthia Praglin

The scene goes something like this… your baby is finally sleeping through the night and naps are generally going well. And then the holidays arrive. Whether you are traveling or having guests stay at your house, holidays can be disruptive to a child’s sleep. Routines often go out the window, and traveling across time zones can be tricky. The good news is, some children actually travel very well, are flexible and easily adapt to new surroundings. These children can return to their normal sleep routines with little or no difficulty. Others tend to be creatures of habit and resist sleep due to the new environment and/or the lack of a predictable schedule. Before you cancel those plans, try some of the tips below!

Typically, a child who sleeps well at home will usually sleep well while traveling. Still, you might want to consider bringing along some familiar reminders of home for the new sleep environment. For crib sleepers, grab the sheets right off the bed, and anything else your child may be attached to including loveys, blankies, stuffed animals, music and favorite books. If your child will be sleeping in a pack n’ play, be sure to have a couple of dry runs (naps will usually do) before leaving. Also, check with the hotel as to what they mean by a “crib.” It could turn out to be a pack n’ play. Consider renting a crib from Baby's Away, a company which will deliver a variety of baby/child accessories to your location.

If your child is still struggling with night time sleep, it may be worth putting off any “training” until after your trip. If your child has just recently begun sleeping through the night (and is resisting the new environment) the temptation to revert back to tried and true measures (rocking, nursing, etc.) is an easy one. If you feel this is your only option, don’t despair. Once home you can begin the “training” all over again. Adopting a “business as usual” attitude will help, simply picking up where you left off.

We hope that you're enjoying finding out more about our different instructors who teach the prenatal classes, mommy&me groups, baby music classes, and all the other workshops and sessions we do here at A Mother's Haven Boutique & Educational Center.

Our next interview is with Synthia Praglin - so many moms have had the benefit of being with Synthia in our Mothers' Gathering classes, which are wonderful education-support-community groups where new moms are together with other moms who have babies the same age. Everyone's going through the same stages and issues, and the instructor informs and supports the whole group through the huge life change of raising a baby!

AMH: What can new moms expect to learn or get from your Mothers' Gathering class?
Synthia: First and foremost, a sense of connectedness. Being a new mom can be very isolating and these groups can be very helpful in minimizing the isolation and loneliness. Additionally, I want moms to feel ‘normal.” It is important that they realize they are not alone in their feelings or experiences and that the group is a great resource for support. Each class addresses a topic geared towards the mom or her baby, so I always hope that they leave with some new information or tip to make the adjustment a bit easier.

AMH: What is your philosophy on parenting?
Synthia: There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to parenting. Each family has its own unique qualities and needs, thus the parenting approach that one chooses must ultimately fit well with those needs. I like to offer a “tool box” from which moms (and dads) can chose tips and techniques that work best for them.

AMH: How did you decide to get into this field?
Synthia: After having been at home with my son for 3 years I realized that it was time to do something in addition to being “Jake’s mom.” My educational background and personal experience including having been in a mommy group, were a perfect fit for facilitating such groups. I began teaching at The Pump Station in Santa Monica and received my certification in infant massage before accepting a position to expand the Mother’s Gathering program at A Mother’s Haven.

AMH: How would you describe yourself in 5 words or less?
Synthia: Empathic, supportive, good listener, good sense of humor (especially when it comes to parenting!)

AMH: What inspires you? What drives you?
Synthia: My 12 year old son inspires me to be the best mom I can be. Knowing that the mother-child relationship is the most significant relationship between two people keeps me constantly assessing what I am saying and doing so that he grows up feeling loved for who he is, not who I may want him to be. Children tell us what they need, we need only to listen with our heart.

AMH: How do you stay current in your field?
Synthia: Blogs, articles, books, workshops and very often, the moms in my groups! They are a wonderful source of information of which there is no shortage.

AMH: What products/resources would you recommend to new or expecting moms?
Synthia: The Sleep Sheep is great for helping little ones sleep.

AMH: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
Synthia: I’d love to go to culinary school!

AMH: Favorite hobby? pastime?
Synthia: I love to cook and travel.

AMH: Best advice you've ever gotten?

Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain.

Trust yourself and trust what you know about your baby. If something doesn’t feel right, find the support you need. Don’t compare your baby to anyone else’s. They will all walk down the aisle and say “I do” just not at the same time.

When was the last time you played with your child? Were you multitasking? Were you holding your PHD (preferred handheld device)? Can you remember the last time you “simply” waited, watched, and wondered? When our babies are newly born, we tend to naturally do a lot of watching and waiting and wondering. But very often, as time progresses, we create new and efficient routines. Our babies and children become more independent. We tend to focus our energy on doing – making money, making food, cleaning, packing, planning – family maintenance. We live in an extraordinarily fast-paced, highly purposeful and demanding culture. It is easy to consider it superfluous to play. But consider this: it is as important for you to play with your children without judgment, agenda, or distraction as it is for them to have clean clothes on their backs.

I would like to present a challenge. Let’s set aside some time every day engaging in focused, child-led, non-judgmental play with our children. Countless developmental theories and establishments (The American Academy of Pediatrics; Stanley Greenspan’s Floortime model; Serena Weider’s DIR model; the Zero to Three movement; mindful parenting philosophies; psychoanalytic child therapies; etc.) encourage us to let go of our agendas and allow our children to guide us in age-appropriate play alongside them. It may feel silly at first, but it will undoubtedly boost your child’s confidence, teach them how to communicate and think emotionally, help develop their ability to solve problems, exercise their imaginations, and facilitate their capacity for warmth and attachment.

If you’re not sure what I mean, consider the following suggestions (Drs. Greenspan & Weider’s theories expanded):

1. Follow your child’s lead. Make calm and encouraging remarks and ask questions.

Younger child example: “You’re shaking the rattle. Shake, shake, shake!”
Older child example: “You’re interested in that book. Which page is your favorite?”

2. Treat whatever your child is doing as intentional and purposeful

Younger child example: “You’re looking at mommy’s eyes. Big, brown eyes!”
Older child example: “I hear you singing to your doll. I bet she likes that.”

3. Encourage your child’s exploration and choices.

Younger child example: “I see you touching your toes. Now Daddy is touching your toes too!”
Older child example: “You want to look inside the cabinet. Let’s look together.”

4. Open the door to symbolic play.

Younger child example: “The car goes vroom!”
Older child example: “I see you holding the teapot. Are you making some tea or hot chocolate?”

5. Be a player, not just a helper.

Younger child example: Crawl through the play tunnel with them. Shake a rattle with them.
Older child example: Get alongside your child and mimic their behaviors. If they’re hammering with their play tools, grab a toy saw and join the fun. If they don’t want help, find other objects for them to hammer. The more engaged in the play you are, the more thrilled they will become.

I know you have a million things to do. I’m a mom too. I know firsthand how challenging it can be to find time for fun. But this is as important as everything else on our To Do list. It will be good for us and good for our children. And, really, isn’t that what life is all about?

Holistic Treatment for Reflux and Colic in Babies

A number of our readers requested to hear more about a holistic approach to treating babies with colic and reflux. Since drugs are often not the answer to treat these common symptoms in babies, another method is usually necessary. Fortunately, a holistic treatment plan could provide relief for these babies and ultimately resolves their symptoms. We've compiled a list of steps taken from The Holistic Baby Guide By Randall Neustaedter, OMD

1. Solve feeding issues. The first step is to address any feeding problems that may contribute to your baby's discomfort. This includes breastfeeding problems and other physical issues.

2. Stay close. Try comforting your baby with constant holding and carrying, perhaps aided by using a sling.

3. Address food sensitivities. Your baby may be sensitive to foods that she's eating. Breastfed babies are often sensitive to the foods that their moms have eaten. Eliminating those foods may ease a lot of symptoms.

4. Get professional assistance. Seek holistic pediatric care and treatment with herbs and other nutritional supplements. Chiropractic care and acupuncture can also be helpful in establishing balance in your baby's system and relieving discomfort.

Conventional medical treatment for reflux typically includes drugs that inhibit gastric-acid production. The theory is that if stomach-acid production is blocked, then acid will not irritate the stomach and esophagus. However, stomach acid is there for a reason-to help in digestion and to inhibit harmful bacteria.

The holistic treatment of reflux and digestive disturbances may involve one or more interventions. These can be put in place one at a time, in succession, or more than one can be started simultaneously. The most effective methods, discussed here, include probiotics, herbal treatment, acupuncture, chiropractic care, and homeopathy.

Establish a Healthy Gut Environment. Since reflux and other digestive symptoms such as gas and diarrhea manifest in the gut of sensitive babies, the first step in treatment is to create the healthiest digestive tract possible. Digestion requires adequate intestinal bacteria colonies that gradually develop in the newborn and infant. Your newborn has no intestinal bacteria prior to birth. After exposure to the birth canal, the mother's skin, and breast milk, the gut is colonized with the normal flora necessary for digestion and maintenance of healthy intestinal function. If a healthy gut flora is not established or if babies are treated with antibiotics that destroy these valuable organisms, then digestion of milk will not go smoothly. Since we don't know when and if a baby has developed healthy bacterial colonies, any baby with digestive symptoms should be given live bacteria as a supplement to ensure a healthy gut ecology.

A supplement containing Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species is indicated for distressed babies. Babies who are solely breastfed have colonies of Bifidobacterium species, but these bacteria may be deficient due to antibiotics given to mothers or babies or for other reasons. Special supplemental formulas of these bacteria are made for the breastfeeding baby to take on a daily basis.

Professional Assistance to Relieve Symptoms. The mainstays for relief of these digestive symptoms in holistic pediatrics are herbal formulas and homeopathic medicines. Chinese medicine interprets reflux and colic as food stagnation and a weakness of the Stomach/Spleen energetic systems, which are responsible for digestion and assimilation of nutrients. The energy of the Stomach moves down. When a weakness or disturbance occurs, then Stomach Qi will move up, producing reflux and vomiting. The Spleen energy system is responsible for digestion and the movement of fluids in the body. The Spleen also generates Nutritive Qi, which nourishes and provides the energetic foundation for other body systems, including the body's defenses (Wei Qi) and immune function.

Chinese medicine provides tools for directly strengthening the digestive system (the Stomach/Spleen network) using herbs and acupuncture. The primary herbal formula for digestive disturbance in babies is Grow and Thrive (produced by Chinese Medicine Works), a nutritive tonic that promotes the assimilation of nutrients and the movement of food through the intestines. This formula was designed to strengthen and support proper digestive function. A secondary herbal formula for reflux and colicky symptoms is Tummy Tamer (Chinese Medicine Works). This formula regulates the function of the digestive system, activating and dispersing the stomach and intestines to move food smoothly along.

Since discomfort and distress in infants is often due to stagnation of food and insufficient movement of food through the digestive tract, a dispersing formula will help to move things along. Other ingredients dispel the accumulation of toxins from food stuck in the stomach and intestines.

Several Western herbal formulas have also been used for the symptoms of reflux or colic. A popular tea containing chamomile, fennel, vervain, licorice, and balm mint was evaluated in a randomized, controlled clinical study and shown to significantly improve the symptoms associated with colic compared to placebo.

Gripe water is a generic name for several Western herb formulas that contain a combination of fennel, ginger, peppermint, and chamomile. Organic forms of gripe water do not contain additives. These herbs do aid digestion and help calm fussy babies, but Chinese herbal formulas will also strengthen and build digestive function to provide a curative treat-ment that tends to prevent recurrences of symptoms.

Acupuncture is an extremely useful adjunct to other treatment modalities for babies with reflux. Stimulation of acupuncture points can be accomplished with needles or non-needle techniques including finger pressure, cold lasers, magnets, or massage of acupuncture channels. Acupuncture is an excellent tool for moving energy, and that is just what your baby needs. Acupuncture will help move energy down, readjust your baby's energy balance, and strengthen Stomach Qi so that food moves downward. In the traditional understanding of energy systems, acupuncture relieves the stagnation of food and the upward surging energy of stomach contents, and calms the crampy discomfort of irritated intestines. Acupuncture is a unique and indispensable tool for readjusting the flow of food through your baby's digestive tract while you're using herbs to strengthen digestive function.

Typical acupuncture treatment will focus on the Spleen and Stomach channels and may include others, depending on the symptoms involved. The points Stomach 36 and 37 and Spleen 6 are standbys. But many other points on a variety of channels can be utilized depending on the presenting symptoms. Tui na acupressure massage and sho ni shin massage are especially valuable treatment options for infants, and they do not require the use of needles. Your acupuncturist can show you safe and effective methods of acupressure to use at home with your baby.

A baby with persistent crying, distress, and reflux symptoms should be evaluated for structural problems by a chiropractic or osteopathic physician who specializes in children. There are many possible causes of structural abnormalities that could contribute to reflux symptoms. Typically, birth trauma occurs from pulling on the head and rotating the neck. This can occur because of mothers lying on their backs during birth, mothers given drugs that slow the birth process, or cesarean sections that require pulling on the baby to extract her from the uterus. This brute force results in tension in and torsion (twisting) of the upper spine and neck. However, even babies born without these sorts of interventions can suffer physical stress during the birthing process that results in spinal injury. Spinal misalignment can be caused by birth trauma or an injury that occurs sometime after the birth.

These misalignments can also be caused by positioning problems initiated in utero, creating postural deviations, such as a baby persistently holding her head in one direction. Chiropractors often attribute the arching of the back seen in babies with reflux to these spinal-cord stress injuries. Chiropractic adjustments will release this tension. Babies may be tender and resistant to touch and pressure on their necks at first, but after a few treatments they become much more settled and relaxed.

An interrelationship exists between the nervous system and the immune system. Problems in your baby's spine and spinal cord can result in immune-system dysfunction as well as digestive disturbance. Alleviating this spinal stress can allow further healing and the re-establishment of balance in the immune system as well. Whatever the cause, having your baby checked and treated with gentle chiropractic adjustments will eliminate spinal structural problems as a possible contributing cause of her crying.

Whereas Chinese medicine and chiropractic require professional help, you can utilize homeopathy yourself-though seeing a qualified homeopath can help with more intransigent problems. The synergistic effect of homeopathy in combination with herbs facilitates the healing process. Where chiropractic corrects structural problems and Chinese medicine corrects the energetic imbalance, homeopathy provides a profound energetic stimulus to healing. When you address the nutritional components of symptom production as well, the overall holistic effect covers all bases and produces a dramatic curative process.

To find the correct homeopathic medicine, compare your baby's symptoms to the cluster of symptoms described for each medicine. Find the description that matches your baby the best, and try using that one. For persistent or prolonged symptoms, it would be best to consult a professional homeopath, who can treat the underlying constitution and root causes of the energetic disturbance that causes colic and reflux.

The homeopathic medicine most often indicated on an acute level is Colocynth, especially if your baby seems better when you press on her abdomen. Jalapa is a colic medicine for babies who cry all night and sleep during the day. Lycopodium is used primarily when gas symptoms are prominent and when the late afternoon and evening (four to eight p.m.) are your baby's worst time of day. Nux vomica corresponds to an exceedingly irritable baby who is worse in the mornings.

When feeding problems and digestive symptoms persist beyond the first few months, if babies continue to spit up large amounts of milk, throw up solids, or continue to scream with abdominal pain that keeps them up at night, then they may require a different treatment regimen than infants.

The first issue to consider is the type of solids that babies are eating. Grains fed at too early an age can cause significant prob¬lems. I recommend that you keep all grains, including rice cereal and oatmeal, out of your baby's diet until at least twelve months (and longer if she is having any allergic or digestive symptoms). Wheat is especially difficult for babies to handle, and it should be avoided in any baby with symptoms. Similarly, dairy products can cause allergies and sensitivities and can damage the intestines of babies. Wait until ten to twelve months for any dairy products. Then you can try yogurt and cheese. Wait until eighteen to twenty-four months before giving whole cow's milk unless your baby must have formula. Babies need the fat of whole dairy products and not reduced-fat preparations.

Older babies may benefit from having specific tests to pinpoint the issues that underlie digestive symptoms. A comprehensive stool test that examines digestive-enzyme production, inflammatory markers, intestinal bacteria, and yeast cultures can be informative and lead to appropriate treatment. Babies with an overgrowth of yeast (Candida albicans) may benefit from supplements including Saccharomyces boulardii (a strain of yeast that helps estab¬lish normal intestinal flora) and a medium-chain triglyceride oil supplement that contains caprylic acid, a potent antifungal fatty acid. Many babies need some additional digestive-enzyme support.

If inflammation is a problem, then the amino acid glutamine in powder form has a potent regenerative effect on the intestinal lining. Glutamine benefits the growth of rapidly dividing cells, providing the nutrition required for the synthesis of new RNA and DNA so that cells can multiply. This is vital for maintaining a healthy lining within the digestive tract, where cells have a rapid turnover rate. When there is digestive inflammation, there is an increased need for glutamine for cell repair and replacement.

It is important for children with digestive inflammation to also take adequate amounts of omega-3 fats for their anti-inflammatory effect (fish oil is the most accessible source of these fats). Older children with digestive problems need a broad-spectrum probiotic that includes a variety of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species. Other nutritional supplements may be needed for healthy digestive function, including pantothenic acid, zinc, hydrochloric acid, and prebiotics, depending on the judgment of a holistic pediatric practitioner.

These children may have food allergies and food sensitivities. Depending on the child's symptoms, a range of food-sensitivity tests can be informative. Often these children have a sensitivity to wheat products (including the proteins in gluten, primarily gliadin). Other grains contain gluten as well. Cow's milk proteins are also irritating to many children's digestive tracts.

For these children, the protein molecules cause damage to the intestinal lining, disturbing the intestinal barrier and allowing potential allergens into the bloodstream. These foreign proteins then stimulate antibody production and allergic reactions in other parts of the body. This is the beginning of the process that leads to allergies in so many children. For this reason, healing the gut is essential to maintaining a healthy immune system.

Is your child ready for preschool?

Finding a good preschool for your child can seem like an overwhelming process but before you even begin the search, you must ask yourself - Is my child ready?

So how do you know? There are no set guidelines. But there are a few things to consider or assess before conducting your search for the perfect preschool.

Is your child fairly independent?

Preschool requires children to have certain basic skills. Some may even require your child to be potty-trained while others may be willing to help with the process. They may expect your child to be able to take care of some other basic needs, like washing his hands after painting, eating his lunch without assistance, and sleeping alone. It is important your child feels comfortable performing certain tasks on his own. Not sure how to start? With most kids, praise goes a long way - compliment each achievement to help build their self esteem.

Has your child spent time away from you?

If your child has been cared for by a babysitter or a relative, she might be better prepared to separate from you when she's at preschool. Kids who are used to being apart from their parents often have an easier time adjusting with little to no separation anxiety. If your child hasn't had many opportunities to be away from you, it might be a good idea to schedule some — a weekend with the grandparents, for instance, or a day with their aunt or cousins. Regardless of their separation issue, many children leave Mom or Dad for the first time to go to preschool and they do just fine. The trick is to help your child adjust in short doses. Many preschools will allow you to drop off your child for an hour or two during her first few days there to help get used to her environment, until you can gradually work up to a full day. This is a great way to help get them ready when they eventual move to kindergarten.

Does your child have self discipline?

Preschool usually involves circle time which requires kids to sit for a significant period of time just listening, or participating in an orderly fashion. There is also lots of arts and crafts projects that require concentration and the ability to focus on an individual task. If your child likes to draw at home or gets engrossed in puzzles and other activities on his own, he might be ready to take on this challenge. But even if he's the kind of child who asks for help with everything, you can start getting him ready by setting up play times where he can entertain himself for a half hour or so. While you wash the dishes, encourage him to figure out ways to be creative on his own - like making shapes and creatures out of clay, etc. Gradually build up to longer stretches of solo play so that he'll get on with his own without too much hand-holding from you.

Is your child able to participate in group activities?

Other than circle time, many of the play and learn projects in preschool require group participation. If your child isn't used to group activities, you can start introducing them yourself. Take him to story time at your local library or bookstore, or sign him up for a class such as Kindermusik or Tiny Dancer to help him get used to playing with other children.

Does your child keep a regular schedule?

Preschools tend to follow a predictable routine - circle time, play time, snack, playground, then lunch. There's a good reason for this. Children tend to feel most comfortable, secure and in control when the same things happen at the same time each day. So if your child doesn't keep to a schedule and each day is different from the last, help him standardize his days a bit before he starts preschool. You can start by offering meals on a regular timetable and creating realistic routines you can stick to such as a bedtime ritual - dinner,bath, reading books, then bed - or whatever works for you.

Does your child possess the physical and emotional endurance for preschool?

Whether it's a half-day or full-day program, preschool can be quite demanding and time consuming. There are art projects to do, field trips to take, and playgrounds to explore. Does your child thrive in these types of activities, or does she have trouble moving from one thing to the next without getting cranky? Another thing to consider is how and when your child needs to nap. Preschools usually schedule nap time after lunch. If she still needs a mid-morning snooze, you might want to give her more time. You can work toward building her stamina by making sure she gets a good night's sleep. If you have some flexibility in your schedule, you might also consider start her off in a half-day program to ease her into this new regime, and gradually increase the length of her school day as she gets more adjusted.

What are your main reasons for wanting to send your child to preschool?

Carefully consider your goals for sending your child to preschool. What need are you looking to fulfill - Going back to work? Need time for yourself? Looking for social and academic outlet for your child? There may be other options if it seems he isn't ready yet for the rigors of school. A good daycare facility or a qualified caregiver may be a good alternative until you feel confident your child is on board.

If you find that your child seems eager to learn new things and explore, he isn't getting enough stimulation at home or daycare, or he seems ready to broaden his social horizons and interact with other children, chances are it's the perfect time to start school.

Most importantly, make a point to talk to your partner and/or child about the different options. Their input will likely affect your decision. Good luck and enjoy the journey!

You all may know Terri as the "mom" of the store since she's the go-to person for everything ranging from classes to nursing bras to carriers! Terri is a master of keeping things running smoothly and under control here at A Mother's Haven and we're so grateful to have her here!

What do you think makes A Mother's Haven different from other baby boutiques?
It's more than a store - it's really an educational center with incredible customer service. Our classes take you from pregnancy to the first few years of your child's life so it's an incredible resource for moms and families in general.

What would you say is the best part about working at A Mother's Haven?
I love the feeling of knowing you've helped someone. Working at A Mother's Haven really gives you the chance to make a difference in someone's life. Often new moms come in here confused and scared of the unknown and it's so rewarding to be able to ease those fears and be able to alleviate whatever stress or challenge they're going through. There's also just a general happy atmosphere here - a sense of new beginnings.

AMH: What is your philosophy on birth and parenting?
Do what works for you. There's no outline for parenting and every child is as different as you and I. Don't stress and do what feels right from the heart.

AMH: How would you describe yourself in 5 words or less?
Caring, compassionate, funny, diligent...

AMH: What inspires you?
Nothing. OK, you can add 'uninspired' to my list of 5 words. (She laughs)
I guess you could say I'm a fixer, I like to create - whether it's cooking or something artistic... I'm inspired by opportunities that allow me to be creative.

AMH: How do you stay current on everything at the store? Any outside research?
Osmosis? Honestly, I like getting feedback from customers about products that work for them - that way I feel comfortable recommending it to others. I'll also go online and research products a customer will mention to learn more about what's new.

AMH: What products/resources would you recommend to new or expecting moms?
Our Mothers' Gathering class is definitely the best thing I'd recommend to new moms. It's a lifesaver. Product wise, I think the Moby Wrap is fantastic and the Aden & Anais blankets are incredible!

AMH: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
That I have seven grandchildren! (Daughter Jamie has 3 kids, and daughter Mandi has 4.)

AMH: Favorite hobby? pastime?
I love musical theater! Les Miserables is my favorite. I also really enjoy reading novels. A recent favorite is The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.

AMH: Favorite spot in LA?
Newport Beach. I love the atmosphere, the beach, people watching, shopping - it's very relaxing. I would spend every weekend there if I could.

AMH: Favorite place to travel?
I enjoy seeing new places. Next on my list are Switzerland, Norway, Germany, Italy... Let's just say Europe.

AMH: Favorite advice to give new/expecting moms?
This too will pass! Truthfully, every stage is incredible and yet a big pain in the butt. You can't wait for your baby to start walking and then when they do, you have to chase them around and think 'why can't they just sit still?' You can't wait for them to start talking, and then they won't stop. You get the idea. But all those moments are what makes the journey of motherhood so amazing.

The importance of eating eggs during pregnancy by Lauren Ryan

We had a discussion in my last childbirth class on eggs. It is recommended that pregnant women eat 2 eggs a day. Why are eggs so important? Eggs are a great source of protein, provide 13 minerals and vitamins and are the most concentrated food source of choline. Choline helps brain cells develop properly and may affect a baby’s ability to learn and remember. Choline also helps protect babies against neural tube defects. Another added bonus is that choline may help a pregnant woman’s brainpower. Pregnant women need 450mg of choline per day and breastfeeding women need 550mg per day.  Here is a breakdown of other food sources that contain choline besides eggs:

1/2 cup spinach: 240 mg
1 hard-boiled egg: 113 mg
1 medium potato: 105 mg
3 ounces boneless pork loin chop: 84 mg
1 cup cooked navy beans: 81 mg
3 ounces roasted chicken leg: 73 mg
3 ounces cod: 71 mg
3 ounces tilapia: 71 mg
3 ounces lean ground beef patty: 63 mg
3 ounces chicken breast: 60 mg
3 ounces sockeye salmon: 55 mg
1/2 cup cooked soybeans: 41 mg
1/2 cup cooked lima beans: 30 mg
2 tablespoons toasted wheat germ: 26 mg
1/ 2 cup cauliflower, raw or cooked: 24 mg
1/2 cup cooked spinach: 23 mg
1/4 cup pistachios: 20 mg
1/4 cup cashews: 21 mg

Lecithin is found in prenatal vitamins, which contains choline so most women are already getting some choline.  What was interesting and slightly disturbing about this discussion is the lack of information OB's are giving their patients about nutrition in pregnancy. OB's are focusing on what pregnant women shouldn't eat, which is a good thing, but not giving them guidance on what they should eat. I cover nutrition in about 15 minutes in class and ask the women to do a food journal so they can be very aware of the amount of protein they are eating (which is 80-100 grams per day). If you're pregnant, please make sure to have a discussion about nutrition with your OB early on.

Encouraging your child to talk

One of the best things about having a toddler is watching, and listening, as their language develops. They go from making sweet little goos and gahs, to being able to carry on a small conversation with you. Parents often tell us that talking with their kids is one of their most favorite things to do.

So how do you help support their speech development...

Talking with your child often, from the time they are very young and with lots of eye contact is how they will learn language the best. They'll start by mimicking and repeating and will want to talk back.

Scrap the baby talk, especially after the age of about 6-9 months when they start developing their first sounds. Use your regular grown up voices, and chances are they'll learn to communicate as effectively as you.

Since babies this young often get frustrated easily by not being able to express themselves, taking a sign language for babies class is an effective solution for many parents. They enrich parent-infant bond further enabling communication and interaction.

Try limiting pacifier use to nap and night time so when your tot is awake and active, they can also be verbal.

Ask Questions. Even if they don’t know the answer, or can’t verbalize it, they'll learn from hearing you tell them the answer and possibly repeat it. Most importantly, it includes them in the conversation, and allows them the opportunity to proactively interact with you.

Repeat words and sounds. Take the time to do so with some encouragement. When they try to say, “mmma,” you can say, “Mama, that’s right, mama.” Or as they get better at talking and they say, “Me do it!” feel free to say, “You want to do it? Okay, great, you do it.” This encourages them to hear and learn the correct way to pronounce words, not to mention, correct grammer.

Sing with them. Often kids can pick up the sounds in songs, or rhymes, earlier than they can pick up other words. Classes such as Kindermusik that encourage speech and movement through music stimulate all areas of child development.

Instructor Feature - An Interview with Lauren Ryan

We hope that you're enjoying finding out more about our incredible instructors at A Mother's Haven Boutique & Educational Center. We are so thankful to have them here to teach all of our moms & babies and to create our wonderful community!

Our next interview is with Lauren Ryan who teaches our Supported Birth and Caring For Your Newborn classes.

Supported Birth is a four week course that educates women and their partners in making conscious choices about the birth of their baby with the help of technical knowledge, confidence in the natural biological process of birth, self exploration, and a variety of coping tools and techniques.

Caring For Your Newborn is a 3 hour class held once a month on a sturday that teaches expecting parents the essential skills they'll need to take care of their new baby in this fun, informative, hands-on environment.

AMH: Lauren, what can expecting moms learn or get from your classes?
Lauren: In Supported Birth – Couples will learn about stages of labor, nutrition, medical interventions, drugs, cesareans, and postpartum issues. More importantly, moms will learn relaxation techniques and explore fears they might have about giving birth. Couples will feel much more prepared and confident about giving birth. Supported Birth teaches couples that there is no “right” way to give birth, which empowers the couple.
In Caring For Your Newborn – couples will learn all about what to expect from their newborn – appearance, newborn procedures, bathing, diapering, dressing, swaddling, holding, soothing and a lot more. It’s meant to make them feel at ease by what can be an an overwhelming procedure while taking away some of the anxiety of the unknown.

AMH: What is your philosophy on birth and parenting?
Lauren: I think it is important for a woman to give birth the way she wants to and do what feel right to her. With parenting, I believe parents need to hold their babies (not haul them around in a car seat when they are not in the car) and talk to them – this makes them smart. Also, parents need to forgive themselves for not being “perfect” and relax.

AMH: How would you describe yourself in 5 words or less?
Lauren: Positive, laid back, friendly, authentic, energetic

AMH: What inspires you?
Lauren: I’m inspired to help make birth a positive experience. If a woman has a baby in a hospital she is not going there because she is sick. She is going there because it is a safe option to give birth in. Laboring women should not be treated as a patient. Caregivers need to treat birth as a natural event and take out unnecessary interventions.

AMH: How do you stay current in your field?
Lauren: I read articles pertaining to pregnancy/childbirth/newborns on sites like Medscape and Mayo Clinic. I am involved in several “networking” groups geared towards childbearing woman that I have learned so much from. Also, I love to read so I stay current with books on pregnancy, labor and newborns. My work as a doula keeps me very up to date on practices going on within hospitals so I can give my students insight into what their hospital experience may be like.

AMH: What products/resources would you recommend to new or expecting moms?
Lauren: I love wraps. They are the best way to carry your baby around. Babies can hear your heartbeat so it calms them down and moms have 2 free hands. Wraps also protect their baby from the rest of the world.

AMH: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
Lauren: I still love roller coasters and going to Hurricane Harbor in the summer.

AMH: Favorite hobby? pastime?
Lauren: I love to read, ride my bike, and play games and watch movies with my family.

AMH: Favorite spot in LA?
Lauren: The old farmers market on Fairfax and the Grove. The farmer’s market has the most amazing food and the Grove is great for people watching.

AMH: Favorite place to travel?
Lauren: Any place tropical with beaches and warm water.

AMH: What is the best advice you've ever gotten?
Lauren: When people (strangers especially) tell you what you are doing wrong with your baby just smile, say thank you and walk away. I would get angry with people but my husband taught me to let it go.

AMH: Favorite advice to give new/expecting moms?
Lauren: Take a childbirth class independent of a hosptial. Get help from friends and family after the baby is born. Tell them what you need – meals, errands, house cleaned, etc. If anyone wants to come visit you and the baby make sure they can help you out in some way.

Lauren Ryan, CSBE (Certified Supported Birth Educator) and a SBLD (Supported Birth Labor Doula) teaches our Supported Birth and Caring For Your Newborn classes. When she was pregnant with her daughter in 2000, she took Supported Birth childbirth education classes and felt incredibly empowered about giving birth after it. When her teacher approached her in 2003 about getting trained as an educator, she was already interested so jumped at the chance to be able provide support for moms like herself. A couple of years later, she yearned to expand her knowledge and so became a labor doula in 2006 and now specializes in the third trimester of pregnancy to one month old infants.

Finding The Right Caregiver For Your Child

Are you going back to work or just need an extra pair of hands to help around the house? Here are some points to consider when looking for a caregiver to you child.

First and foremost, this is one area you shouldn't compromise on — your child deserves the best caregiver you can find, so be prepared for a long search. You'll need to be patient and resourceful, consulting everyone from friends and family to nanny agencies about possible candidates. It's important to get recommendations from whoever you choose to hire regardless of where you get them from, so you can get a sense of their interactions with others who are in a similar situation to yours.

To start, you'll need to identify your priorities - what are your specific requirements. Consider talking to your partner about what your ideal sitter or nanny would be like. Would it be someone older or younger? Starting our or more experienced? Is a degree in early childhood education important to you? Make a list you can refer to when you start interviewing applicants or talking to nanny agencies.

Next, do your research. Get the word out to friends and family. Being able to get references from someone you know will be the most reassuring. If you belong to any mommy groups, or attend parenting classes such as Mommy and Me and more - they would be a great resource to ask. You can also post an ad in local online message/bulletin/job boards like craigslist, or ones more specific to parenthood.

If you'd like to try out the pros, you can visit nanny referral sites such as Care.com, sittercity.com, enannysource.com, aupaircare.com or nanny.com to find ones in your area. You can do a specific search for locations, wages, gender, languages, etc. - so you can be as choosy as you'd like. These online nanny referral services post listings from parents and prospective nannies are less costly than local agencies, but not free. Fees range from $30 to $500, depending on how long you keep your listing active and the type of service you need but the basics usually include helpful guidelines and forms, with background checks available for additional fees. You can also try websites such as nannynetwork.com which are clearinghouses for many online agencies and offer helpful guidelines and forms, as well as information about taxes and any special offers available from its members.

Once you are ready to set up interviews, talk to as many applicants as you can. Ask specific questions about their work experience and childrearing philosophies as well as personal habits and background. Be sure to include your child when you meet with candidates so you can see how the they interact. This can be very telling. Trust your gut. If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't.

When you've narrowed down your top candidates, make sure to call their references. Ask former employers about the nanny's strengths and weaknesses and why they're no longer using her. It's important to know how this person has and hasn't worked out for other families.

If you're still contemplating, ask your favorite contenders to come to your home one at a time for a few days' trial run. Pay each for their time and observe how they interact with your child. Try leaving for a short period of time to give your child minimal time alone and gage their reaction when you come back. This will not only help reassure your child but you as well.

Here are some sample questions you can ask when interviewing caregivers:

* How long have you been a nanny?

* How old were the other children you cared for?

* Do you have any formal early childhood development or childcare training?

* Do you have emergency training? CPR/First Aid?

* If not, would you be willing to take CPR classes and first-aid training?

* What would you do if my child was sick or had an accident?

* Would you mind if I ran a background check on you?

* Describe your discipline technique?

* What has been your biggest challenge on the job?

* what is your favorite thing about being a caregiver?

* Describe your ideal family/employer

* What are some of the rules you've followed in other households that you think worked well?

* Would you be willing to follow my rules and disciplining/comforting strategies even if they're different from yours?

* What type of activities do you like to do with children?

* If I'm working in the house, will you be able to keep my child happily occupied without involving me?

* Do you have future plans (school, job, marriage, etc.) that would put a limit on how long you expect to be a nanny?

* Do you have a well-functioning car, with appropriate safety belts and room for car seats?

* Are you willing to do light chores while our baby is sleeping? Which ones?

* When would you be able to start working?

* Would you be available to work evenings or weekends?

* Would you be available to travel with our family for weekends/vacations?
